01 The Problemالفجوة

We learn engineering.
We don't build it. ندرس الهندسة،
ولا نصنعها.

Engineering education in Egypt happens almost entirely on paper. Four years of theory, exams, and reports. Students graduate without ever cutting, welding, soldering, or printing a single thing they spent those years studying.

The actual building happens on the technical teams — eleven of them at Alexandria University, designing cars, drones, planes, ROVs, and autonomous robots for international competitions. That's where engineers are actually made.

And those teams are broke. Self-funded, every one of them, sending hundreds of thousands of pounds a year out of student pockets and into external workshops. Smaller budget, slower car. Smaller budget, weaker airframe. Smaller budget, smaller ambition.

التعليم الهندسي في مصر بيحصل كله تقريباً على الورق. أربع سنين نظريات وامتحانات وتقارير، والطالب يتخرج من غير ما يقطع أو يلحم أو يطبع حاجة واحدة من اللي درسها.

الصناعة الحقيقية بتحصل في الفرق التقنية — إحدى عشرة فرقة في كلية الهندسة بالإسكندرية، بتبني سيارات وطيارات وغواصات وروبوتات للمسابقات الدولية. هنا بيتولد المهندس فعلاً.

والفرق دي محدش مموّلها. كل فرقة بتمول نفسها، وبتدفع مئات الآلاف من الجنيهات سنوياً لورش خارجية تصنّع لها قطعها. ميزانية أقل، يبقى عربية أبطأ. ميزانية أقل، يبقى هيكل أضعف. ميزانية أقل، يبقى طموح أصغر.

What is a
Fab Lab? إيه هو الـ
Fab Lab؟

A Fab Lab — short for fabrication laboratory — is a workshop equipped with the digital and analog tools to make almost anything. Laser cutters. CNC machines. 3D printers. Electronics benches. Hand tools. All of it open to a community of makers.

The concept was born at MIT in 2001 and has grown into a global network of more than two thousand labs across over one hundred countries. The idea is simple: give people access to professional tools, and they build things that change the places they live in.

A Fab Lab is the difference between learning about a machine, and learning through one.

Ebtekar Lab is Alexandria University's contribution to that idea. A space that takes the world's most useful educational concept and points it directly at the engineers who need it most.

الـ Fab Lab، اختصار لـ Fabrication Laboratory، هو ورشة مجهزة بالأدوات الرقمية والميكانيكية اللي بتخليك تصنع أي حاجة تقريباً. ماكينات قطع بالليزر، CNC، طابعات ثلاثية الأبعاد، طاولات إلكترونيات، عدد يدوية. وكل ده مفتوح لمجتمع من الصُنّاع.

الفكرة بدأت في معهد MIT سنة ٢٠٠١، ودلوقتي بقت شبكة عالمية فيها أكتر من ألفين معمل في أكتر من مية دولة. الفكرة بسيطة: لما تدّي الناس وصول لأدوات احترافية، بيبنوا حاجات بتغيّر المكان اللي حواليهم.

الـ Fab Lab هو الفرق بين إنك تتعلم عن الماكينة، وإنك تتعلم من الماكينة.

معمل ابتكار هو إسهام جامعة الإسكندرية في الفكرة دي. مساحة بتاخد أنجح مفهوم تعليمي في العالم، وتوجّهه مباشرةً للمهندسين اللي محتاجينه أكتر من أي حد.

A workshop fully equipped through industry partnership, run by students, and free for every student in the faculty. ورشة كاملة التجهيز عن طريق شراكات صناعية، يديرها الطلاب، ومجانية لكل طالب في الكلية.
Equipmentالمعدات

Laser cutters, CNC machines, 3D printers, electronics benches, sheet-metal tools, computing workstations, and the consumables that feed them. Sourced through long-term partnerships with Egyptian and international companies. ماكينات ليزر، CNC، طابعات ثلاثية الأبعاد، طاولات إلكترونيات، أدوات صفائح معدنية، محطات حاسوب، والمستهلكات اللي بتشغّلهم. كله بييجي عن طريق شراكات طويلة الأمد مع شركات مصرية وعالمية.

Operationالإدارة

Student-run from day one. A core team handles scheduling, training, machine maintenance, and the partnerships that keep the place alive. Faculty advisors oversee. Students lead. الطلاب هم اللي مسؤولين من أول يوم. فريق أساسي بيدير الجداول والتدريب والصيانة والشراكات. أعضاء هيئة التدريس بيشرفوا، والطلاب بيقودوا.

Free for every student in the Faculty of Engineering. Technical teams, course projects, graduation projects, master's research, and any student with an idea worth building. مجاني لكل طالب في كلية الهندسة. الفرق التقنية، مشاريع المقررات، مشاريع التخرج، أبحاث الماجستير، وأي طالب عنده فكرة تستاهل تتنفّذ.

The eleven competition teams at the heart of the faculty. Free, prioritized access to every machine. Materials sourced by the lab, not by the team treasurer at 2 AM the week before a competition. إحدى عشرة فرقة في قلب الكلية. وصول مجاني وأولوية على كل ماكينة. المعمل هو اللي بيوفّر المواد، مش أمين خزنة الفرقة الساعة اتنين الصبح قبل المسابقة بأسبوع.

Anyone with an idea that doesn't fit a team or a competition. A product, a startup, a thesis, a side project. Free access, same as everyone. أي حد عنده فكرة مش لازم تبقى تابعة لفرقة أو مسابقة. منتج، شركة ناشئة، رسالة، أو مشروع جانبي. وصول مجاني، زيّ زيّ أي حد.

Course Projectsمشاريع المقررات

Students assigned a project for credit no longer outsource the build to a stranger they overpay. They make it themselves, learn what their professor was actually trying to teach, and keep the money. الطالب اللي مكلّف بمشروع لمقرر مش هيضطر يلجأ لورشة بره ويدفع أكتر من اللازم. هيصنّعه بإيده، هيفهم اللي الدكتور كان عايز يوصّله، وهيوفّر الفلوس.

Graduate students working on applied research can prototype and iterate inside the faculty, instead of waiting on budget approvals for every external machining run. طلبة الدراسات العليا في الأبحاث التطبيقية ينفّذوا نماذجهم ويطوّروها جوّه الكلية، بدل ما يستنوا موافقات ميزانية على كل عملية تصنيع خارجية.

Phase 01المرحلة ١

Map the need.حصر الاحتياج.

Sit with the leads of every technical team. Document every material, every process, every component, and the annual quantities the faculty actually needs.قعدات مع قادة كل فرقة تقنية. توثيق كل مادة، كل عملية تصنيع، كل مكوّن، والكميات السنوية اللي الكلية محتاجاها فعلاً.

Phase 02المرحلة ٢

Map the suppliers.حصر الموردين.

Build a working database of Egyptian and international companies that produce or distribute each item. Identify the natural partners for each category.بناء قاعدة بيانات للشركات المصرية والعالمية اللي بتصنّع أو بتورّد كل عنصر. تحديد الشريك الطبيعي لكل فئة.

Phase 03المرحلة ٣

Faculty endorsement.دعم الكلية.

Secure formal university backing. Letters of intent and outreach sent on faculty letterhead, signed at the dean level.الحصول على دعم رسمي من الجامعة. خطابات النيّة والتواصل مع الشركات بترويسة الكلية وتوقيع على مستوى عمادة الكلية.

Phase 04المرحلة ٤

Founding Partners Summit.قمة الشركاء المؤسسين.

A launch event at the faculty. Company representatives invited. The lab is presented, the teams introduced, and interest converted into commitments on the day.حفل إطلاق في الكلية. ممثلين الشركات مدعوّين. عرض للمعمل، تعريف بالفرق، وتحويل الاهتمام لالتزامات في نفس اليوم.

Phase 05المرحلة ٥

Build the space.تجهيز المكان.

Receive equipment. Install machines. Train technicians. Write the safety protocol. Stand up the booking system. The lab gets walls, machines, and rules.استلام المعدات. تركيب الماكينات. تدريب الفنيين. كتابة بروتوكول السلامة. تشغيل نظام الحجز. المعمل بياخد جدرانه، ماكيناته، وقواعده.

Phase 06المرحلة ٦

Open day.يوم الافتتاح.

The first official day of Ebtekar Lab. Teams move in. Course-project students walk through the door. The first part cut on a partnered machine carries that partner's name.أول يوم رسمي لمعمل ابتكار. الفرق بتنتقل. طلبة مشاريع المقررات بيدخلوا من الباب. أول قطعة بتتقطع على ماكينة بشراكة بتحمل اسم الشريك.
